How to unfold a complex elbow tee with CaldereriaOnline.com

Not every piece you need to fabricate has a ready-made pattern. Sometimes the geometry is simply too specific or too complicated to be covered by a single development. But that doesn't necessarily mean you need to start from scratch or build the entire part in a full CAD system.

With the tools available at CaldereriaOnline.com, you can sometimes solve a complex part by breaking it down into simpler geometries that the platform can develop individually. Once the individual patterns are generated, they can be combined and trimmed in CAD to produce the final shape. This is particularly useful for complicated branches, elbows, tees, and other intersecting sheet metal parts.

One example is a complex elbow tee where a 90° elbow intersects a main pipe in several separate zones. Instead of trying to find one pattern that represents the entire assembly, the elbow can be divided into its individual gores, and each relevant gore can be treated as an auxiliary branch pipe. The corresponding pipe intersection pattern is then generated for each gore. The resulting sections can be overlaid with the elbow gores and trimmed to obtain the actual intersection shape.

The process is essentially a matter of solving several smaller problems instead of one large problem. In the example shown in our video playlist, a main pipe and a three-gore 90° elbow are developed separately. Each of the three intersecting gores is processed as a branch, and the resulting patterns are then assembled and trimmed in CAD. The final result is the main pipe with the correct opening and the three modified gore sections that form the elbow tee.
